Founder Cash Metrics

Working Capital

Current assets minus current liabilities — the cash cushion available to fund day-to-day operations.

Working capital = current assets − current liabilities: what you have that converts to cash within a year (cash, receivables, inventory, prepaids) minus what you owe within a year (payables, accrued expenses, the current portion of debt, deferred revenue obligations). Positive working capital means short-term obligations are covered by short-term resources.

The number matters less than its components and trend. You can be sitting on positive working capital that's entirely stuck in slow receivables while payables are overdue — technically fine, practically brittle. For subscription businesses, deferred revenue is a big current liability, so a growing book of annual prepayments can push working capital negative even as cash piles up — another case where one number without its breakdown misleads. What kills companies is a working-capital gap: paying suppliers in 15 days while customers take 90.

Example

Current assets: $120,000 cash, $47,000 receivables, $6,000 prepaids = $173,000. Current liabilities: $31,500 payables, $9,000 accrued payroll, $40,000 deferred revenue = $80,500. Working capital is $92,500 — but if receivables are all 90+ days late while payables are due this week, the real position is much tighter than the headline.

Common questions

Is working capital the same as cash?

No — cash is one component of it. Working capital includes everything converting within a year (receivables, inventory, prepaids) minus everything owed within a year. A company can have plenty of working capital and almost no cash, or vice versa.

Is positive working capital always good?

Usually, but context decides. Excess working capital can mean idle cash or bloated receivables earning nothing. Negative working capital can be normal for subscription businesses collecting in advance. What's always bad is a widening gap between how fast you pay out and how fast you collect.
