Close & Reconciliation
Month-End Close
The recurring process of finalizing a month's books — reconciling, adjusting, and reviewing — so the financial statements are accurate.
The month-end close is the sequence of steps that turns a month of raw transactions into trustworthy financial statements: reconcile bank and credit card accounts, review AR and AP, post accruals and deferrals, run depreciation, verify revenue recognition, and have someone review and sign off. It happens every month because the alternative is discovering errors months later, when they're exponentially harder to trace.
A close isn't paperwork — it's the company's only recurring systematic verification of every number it reports. Rush it and the misses compound: one skipped accrual in January becomes two in February; by year-end you're guessing or restating. The quality of your close cadence (days to close) and rigor directly determine how quickly leadership can see problems and how much an auditor or investor trusts the numbers.
Example
A 10-person startup closes on the fifth business day: days 1–2 bank/credit card/AR/AP reconciliations, day 3 accruals, deferrals, and depreciation, day 4 draft financials and flux analysis against prior month, day 5 founder/controller review and sign-off. Late in the month, the numbers in the dashboard match reality — and mismatches get caught while people still remember the transactions.
Common questions
How long should a month-end close take?
For a small company with clean books, three to five business days is standard. If yours regularly takes two weeks, the bottleneck is usually missing source data (unbilled invoices, unreconciled accounts) rather than the accounting work itself.
What happens if you skip a month-end close?
Nothing appears to happen — until the next close. Errors, missing accruals, and unreconciled accounts pile up, making every subsequent close harder and less reliable. Skipping close doesn't defer the work; it multiplies it.
